Cannibal Roses, Bangkok

Photo taken by n23art who has suffered from depression most of his life, although he didn’t realise it until his mid 20′s. Most of the time it’s manageable, but there have been a few times when it has hit him very hard. He is originally from the UK, but has been living in Asia for the past five years. He recently moved from Korea to Thailand.

About this photo: This photograph was taken at the Club Ibiza Halloween Party in Bangkok in 2008. That night, four years ago, I was hired to photograph three Halloween parties in Bangkok. Some people might think of this as a fun assignment but trying to get to three different clubs on the same night was difficult when you factor in the bad traffic on a rainy night in Bangkok, it was exhausting. The brief was to show people having a good time at the clubs but I couldn’t resist the temptation to take some artistic shots. This is one of the shots I didn’t submit. I was told by someone that this image was very sexual, however I disagree. The ghost image was created by firing the flash during a long exposure. To me it gives the impression that they were possessed by some demonic force. I’m curious to know what others think of the image, sexy? creepy? neither?

Human-demons. At least these are recognizable as such. Others hide behind lies.

I like the composition, the ghosts are looking at the crowd away from the camera, while the girl demon on the right has turned and is looking straight at you out of the image. Yeah, very creepy.

This image can be either sexy or creepy yet neither. It depends on what someone sees or thinks of it. :)

However I like the idea or concept of this picture. :)

Agreed. My intention was not to make it a sexual image but I understand that some people will view it that way. If anyone has spent time in Bangkok they may also see a satirical element to the image.

I agree with you about the satirical element to the image though I’ve never been to Bangkok or any other part in Thailand. But I do read some story about Thailand and ever met friends from there.

This image can tell lots of story, very provoking. IMHO :)

Thank you. In some ways it does represent depression, we’re all trying to expel the demons.

deep, creepy, but there is an element of fun. a light and dark side, like living with depression I think. Truly great shot :)

Thanks, I also like the fact that there’s some ambiguity. It’s open to interpretation.

Disturbing. It’s a great shot but makes me very uncomfortable looking at it.

Thank you. I just returned from a brief trip to Bangkok and I’m reminded that this image is a metaphor for the uglier side of that city.
