Photo taken by first-time contributor Holly Neiweem. She has suffered from clinical depression, and last month, she lost her younger brother to suicide. She strives to ensure that mental health issues are not whispered about; but instead, spoken about openly. She wants people to understand that mental illness is real and those that suffer should be treated with compassion and understanding. She writes about issues including mental health at makinglemonades.com.
About this photo: “This picture, titled Unravel, was taken in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe in 2013. This is the interior stairway that leads to a spectacular view of the city. We may not all take the most direct path through life. And, at times, the climb seems never-ending. Some, like my brother, may not make it to the top. But, we carry on in their memory and will eventually reach that breathtaking view together.”
*This week, the 8th to 14th of September, is Suicide Prevention Week. This is a reminder to keep the suicide dialogue open. If you or someone you know are at risk for suicide, don’t isolate and seek assistance immediately. Contact your doctor, therapist, or a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention hotline, such as 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
